Cooper to have Operation

Newport Gwent Dragons scrum half Gareth Cooper will undergo an ankle operation this week.

Newport Gwent Dragons scrum half Gareth Cooper will undergo an ankle operation this week. Cooper first damaged his ankle playing for the North team in the Tsunami match in early March. Cooper was out for just under two months and returned for The Dragons in their Celtic Cup quarterfinal match against the Scarlets.

Cooper gained selection for the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand and started their opening match against Argentina. However, on his return from the tour Cooper was still experiencing trouble with his ankle and a further scan revealed there was a problem with floating fragments of bone. It is necessary for Cooper to have an operation to clear up the problem. Cooper is currently on honeymoon in South Africa and will have the operation to remove the fragments from the ankle on Thursday. It is expected that Cooper will take between four to six weeks to recover before he resumes training with The Dragons.

“Even though it is a fairly minor operation I need it to ensure that I am fully fit,” commented Cooper. “It is frustrating as I just want to get out playing again however, once I have had the operation I can put the injury fully behind me and concentrate on playing for The Dragons Region again.”
