Dragons Secure Win

Newport Gwent Dragons got their Celtic League campaign back on track with a 20-16 victory over Border Reivers but were made to work hard for their win.

The Dragons led 13-3 at half time thanks to a Jason Forster try, two Craig Warlow penalties and a Warlow conversion. The Borders brought the score line to 13-6 thanks to two Charlie Hore penalties before Gareth Wyatt scored a superb try catching a cleverly worked Warlow chip. Warlow’s conversion gave The Dragons a 20-6 lead.

However, Borders struck back with a Stephen Cranston try which was converted by Hore and his penalty in the 67th minute made the final part of the match a nervous affair for The Dragons as Borders camped on their line. The visitors did have the chance to sneak the win at end but wing Nikki Walker knocked the ball on with the line at his mercy.

Speaking after the game Head Coach Paul Turner commented, "It looked like we were trying to lose that game, not guide it home. I felt that at 13-3 we should have gone away from them, and I think we would have done that if we had our international stars playing. But Borders are a good unit who play attractive rugby and we didn't have the firepower to kill them off. Credit to the boys who have come into the team, though. We're a tight unit and they got the job done."
