The Welsh team mounted a spectacular comeback to secure the plate and finish in fifth place in the competition.

Wales trailed 28-12 with only two and a half minutes on the clock, however they performed a magnificent comeback.

They went in at the interval trailing 14-12 with Welsh tries coming from Jonny Vaughton and Dragons No.8 Rhys Oakley, however, South Africa started the second half the brighter scoring two quick tries to give them a 28-12 lead. Then the Welsh fightback started with replacement Tal Selley playing an instrumental part. A Rhys Williams try brought the score to 28-24 and it looked as though Wales had been beaten by the clock. However, deep  into injury time James Hook scored in the corner to secure the win.

Speaking on the win coach Dai Rees commented, “We have beaten some quality teams to win this and I hope people realise back home that this is a very high standard of rugby and I hope we continue to play it in Wales because everyone has benefited from it. People like Rhys Williams deserve a special mention. This is the first time he has played sevens rugby and he has been absolutely amazing. It has been a hard season for him and hopefully this will spark his international comeback and a return to form at regional level.”
