Newport Gwent Dragons secured their first ever win at Stradey Park last Saturday when they defeated the Scarlets.

The Dragons raced into a 20-0 lead after only twenty minutes scoring two tries. New signings Andy Williams and Richard Parks played well for the home side as The Dragons played in the right areas of the field as they heaped the pressure on the home side in the opening quarter.

It was a spirited and determined display from the Men of Gwent as they defied their critics to secure the opening win of the season away from home.

The opening minute saw The Dragons get on the scoreboard after the Scarlets failed to collect the kick off and Richard Mustoe capitalised and raced to the try line, he was hauled down but some quick recycling saw prop Rhys Thomas barge his way over for a try. Fly half Aled Thomas who was in great kicking form all match added the conversion.

Aled Thomas added another penalty to put The Dragons 10-0 up before Gareth Wyatt intercepted a Scarlets pass on half way and raced unopposed to score under the posts leaving Thomas with an easy conversion which he duly slotted, and soon after Thomas landed his second penalty.

Wyatt's defensive abilities were soon tested when he hauled Scarlets wing Garan Evans into touch just short of the try line. This was on the half hour mark and was the Scarlets first real attack into The Dragons half.

Ceirion Thomas did slot a penalty just before half time for the home side but The Dragons went in 20 points ahead at the interval.

You knew The Dragons would face an onslaught in the opening of the second half and the Scarlets didn't disappoint. Garan Evans and Iestyn Thomas both scored for the home side as they crept back into the game as they scored 17 points in 15 minutes. However, despite being a man down when Aled Thomas was yellow carded, the visitors crept back in front when Andy Williams scored from short range to give The Dragons their first win at Stradey and kept their tradition of winning their first league game on the road.
