With players reporting for pre-season training three weeks ago and preparations for the 2010-11 season well underway, the Men Of Gwent are already looking forward to this season’s big kick-off.
Luke Charteris was ruled out of the final two games of last season and subsequently missed the Wales tour to New Zealand. But the 6ft 9ins second row is hoping to get the green-light to recommence full training ahead of the Dragons’ next assault on the Magners League.
“I had an operation on my elbow about four weeks ago,” said Charteris.
“I was getting pins and needles down my arm which they thought was to do with a neck injury. But I’m feeling good and due to see the specialist again this week. Hopefully he will give me the go-ahead to start contact training.
“I’m really looking forward to the new season. We’ve managed to keep most of the boys together and have added a few new guys along with some new coaches.
“We’ve brought in good players like Hugo Ellis and Scott Morgan and then there are the younger guys like Toby Faletau. For them to be with us full-time will be a big benefit.
“I think the boys will be in great shape. Having more depth to the squad will be a big help. At times last year we were without a lot of first team players. Having these boys in the squad and training full-time will make things a lot easier.
“Looking at our squad, we are definitely in a better position than we were this time last year. The boys are a lot more experienced, they have got another season under their belts and then you have Will Harries and Gavin Thomas going on the Welsh tour. I think all bodes well for the new season.”
And the 22-times capped lock expects the Dragons to achieve bigger and better things in all competitions after last year’s progress. “I think this year we need to push on and get to the Magners League playoffs. If we pick up a couple of wins on the road and get some bonus points, I’m sure we will be in a good position.
“There’s also the added challenge of the Italian teams in the league and they will have strong sides. But I’m looking forward to going out there. Hopefully we can play them early doors so we get some nice weather. One thing is for sure – It will be better than a winter’s game in Connacht.
“I also think in the Heineken we need to kick on. People say we should focus on the Magners, but we want to do well in Europe as well. We want to get out of our group. It’s a tough group, but there are no easy groups in the Heineken Cup. If we play well I’m sure we can do something.
“Being a World Cup year there’s that added incentive for all players. I didn’t go to the last one but I am confident I can make the squad. I’m feeling good and think I was playing well last year, it is just a shame I got the injury.
“But I’ve been able to work on other things. I am always looking to improve and hopefully I can add to my game. But for now I am just really looking forward to kicking-off the season with the Dragons.”
