The Second Half programme has always been unique, a powerful out of school learning experience that has been enjoyed by literally thousands of young pupils throughout Gwent.

As well as being a super day it has always been synonymous with its generosity, with pupils being presented with Rodney’s Work out Book packed with exciting activities for the kids to enjoy, match day programmes and most unusually a loaf of bread.

With the local Rogerstone bakery closing, it looked like the end of providing pupils with the ‘staff of life’ and their carbohydrate intake was in peril.

But long time Dragons supporter Russell Gibbons, from the Gibbons bakery, on hearing of the loss to the programme has stepped into the breech and has undertaken to provide bread to the pupils when they visit the educational programme at Rodney Parade.

“Russell has been very keen in showing his commitment to our community activities” said a beaming Mike Sage the manager of the Community Department. “And we are absolutely delighted for his support as we have the same ethos; we both take great pride and pleasure in delivering a quality product”.

Russell himself delivered the first batch and found that he was surrounded by the grateful pupils of St Mary’s RC school. Dragons star Hugh Gustafson was also on hand to present the kids with their loaves, and on sampling some of Gibbons crusty loaf was soon demanding that the players be allowed to visit the programme so that they too could enjoy the super bread that is now a major strand in demonstrating how we need to eat healthily and fuel ourselves properly.

As for the pupils all they could say, through mouthfuls of bread was, “Delicious!”
