Last year the Welsh Region finished runners up after Gloucester clinched the title. However this time around the Dragons were determined to go one better and take the title.
Victory for the Dragons in Round 1 of the series meant that they once again were to compete at the final and they were drawn against Sale Sharks as the first match of the finals.
The Dragons opened the Singha Premiership Sevens Tournament with a win against Sale Sharks. With tries from Luke Crocker, James Benjamin, Elliot Frewen and Angus O’Brien, the Men of Gwent made sure that the Dragons made it through to the Cup Semi-Finals with ease.
Its Round 1’s man of the round who crossed at the Stoop with use of a gap in the oppositions defence speedster Elliot Frewen after running a clean line through the defence. But Sale Sharks replied with their own try from James Mitchell, only for Ebbw Vale star Luke Crocker to cross the whitewash with a conversion from skipper Geraint Rhys Jones.
The Dragons come out flying in the second half as back row James Benjamin scores for the region in the corner and sevens star Angus O’Brien nailed a tricky kick over the posts. In quick succession Sale Sharks captain James Mitchell scores a try for the opposition but its not enough as the clock strikes 00:00 O’Brien crosses for the final try of the match taking the win for the Men of Gwent.
Next up for the Welsh Region were last years champions Gloucester Rugby. It was the cherry and whites that took away the title last year in the final so this year it was the Dragons chance to take the win.
The Dragons once again opened up the scoring as James Benjamin made it over with less than a minute gone on the clock. It was winger Ashton Hewitt who over for the Dragons second try, which was converted. Gloucester Rugby’s Mat Protheroe finally managed to break through the tough Dragons defence with a try and it was followed by another try from teammate Ben Vallacott, with the conversion putting the English side into the lead. However it was substitution Harri Keddie who saved the day after crossing in the corner to seal the win against the 2014 champions.
The final draw was against Wasps as they took the win away from the Scarlets in the second cup semi-final.
Man of the tournament Elliot Frewen opened up the Dragons account with an early try, converted by sipper Geraint Rhys Jones.
But Wasps star Christian Wade showed his skills as he darted down for the Wasps, levelling the scores at half time.
With the scores level the Dragons knew that this next half was still all tp play for. Dragons flanker James Benjamin snuck past the defence and dabbed the ball down to once again take the lead but once again Wade stepped on the gas and crossed the whitewash for the opponents just giving them that edge on the scoreboard. But it was Harri Keddie who went over for the Dragons for his second match-winning try which resulted in the Dragons being crowned 2015 Singha Premiership Rugby 7s champions.
