Dragons Premiership Select v Jersey Match Report

Newport Gwent Dragons Premiership select made it two from two yesterday with a gripping match against Jersey at the home of Cross Keys, Pandy Park.

Katie Vizard | 23/11/2015

The British and Irish Cup match was a thrilling watch as the Men of Gwent secured the win at the death with a wonderful try from replacement Arwel Robson.

It was the hosts who opened up their account when scrum half Luc Jones crossed the whitewash and flyhalf Angus O’Brien converted the try after 12 minutes.

However, the opposition attacked the Dragons PS defence with a try of their own. It was Moates who passed to McCrea who in turn, made his way under the posts. Flyhalf Aaron Penberthy converted the try to make the scores even.

A yellow card for Jersey, for a deliberate knock-on, saw the Dragons PS make the most of the man advantage. A lovely chip from Angus O’Brien saw Adam Jones gather to cross in the corner, O’Brien converting once again. However, a long range penalty from the opposition saw the Dragons PS lead reduced to 17-10 at the break.

Half Time: Dragons Premiership Select 17 – Jersey RFC 10

Jersey had pulled their socks up during half time and after some team effort scrum half Jack Moates crossed for a converted try to level the scores to 17-17.

A scrum penalty saw the Dragons PS edge into the lead with a neat penalty kick from Angus O’Brien. But Jersey were soon leveling the scores as a penalty was given away from the Dragons PS – Angus O’Brien exchanged another kick after this to make the scores 23-20 to the home team. However, Jersey picked up their attack with a driving maul and it was flanker James Benjamin who was penalised with a yellow card, resulting in the referee awarding the opposition with a converted penalty try.

It appeared to be all over for the Dragons PS when another penalty saw Jersey have another shot at goal, however Penberthy missed which allowed the home side to counter attack. With a glorious break from Barney Nightingale, the centre offloaded to replacement Arwel Robson which in turn saw him cross in the dying seconds of the match.
