Edinburgh v Dragons Match Report

In what was a disappointing end to the Chllenge Cup campaign the Dragons went down 45-16 to a spirited Edinburgh team at BT Murrayfield.

Despite taking the lead early on through a well struck Dorian Jones penalty, the Dragons could not hold back the Edinburgh tide with three yellow cards not helping the cause.

The Dragons took an early three point lead following a scrum infringement from the home team, but Edinburgh were able to pull back three points after Dragons number 8 Taulupe Faletau was sent to the bin for pulling down an Edinburgh driving maul.

Now with an extra player on the field, Edinburgh were able to exert some extra pressure and claim a try through Stuart McInally. With the conversion added the scores stood at 10-3 to Edinburgh.

The Dragons were able to pull some points back though with a penalty successfully converted by Dorian Jones to bring the Dragons back to 10-6 with Faletau still to come on.

Despite the Dragons being able to field an equal compliment Edinburgh hit back with another try, this time through Tim Visser after a neat back handed offload by Hidalgo-Clyne with the latter missing the conversion, leaving Edinburgh nine points ahead, 15-6.

The remainder of the first half saw the Dragons pull back three points with another penalty through Jones before Hidalgo-Clyne replied with two more of his own.

Half Time: Edinburgh 21 – 9 Newport Gwent Dragons

The second half began with promise for the Dragons with Brok Harris making it over the tryline after just four minutes into the restart, Jones was once again successful with the boot to bring the scores to within just five points, 21-16.

This was to be the closest the Dragons would get though with two further yellow cards to Jonathon Evans and T. Rhys Thomas along with three further converted tries and one penalty for Edinburgh.

Tries came in through Ben Toolis, Hidlago-Clyne and Dougie Fife along with three conversions and a penalty from the simply superb scrum half, Hidalgo-Clyne to give Edinburgh a well deserved 45-16 win.
