As the Dragons Community Department’s flagship, primary school project, “Gateway Rugby”, end after another successful year, attention has turned towards helping several of the region’s mini & junior community rugby clubs with their recruitment days in readiness for the coming season.
First up, the Dragons Community coaches visited Pontypool United RFC, where they took the BT Sport TACKLE Project cage and the infamous “Rodney the Dragon” passing challenge with them. On the day, they even invited Dragons scrum half, Charlie Davies, along to help inspire over 200 new and existing players to join their local club.
The following week, and off the back of the thrilling 3rd Lions test match against the All Blacks, the Community team visited the Pontypool ‘Party in the Park’ in partnership with Melin Homes. The event, offered a unique opportunity for young children and their families to experience rugby & the TACKLE Cage for the first time. It was clear that rugby fever had clearly gripped the kids, as the Dragons staff were inundated with youngsters, eager to try their hand at a brand-new sport.
Most recently, the Dragons Community staff were out on the road again, this time visiting Newbridge RFC for their mini, junior and youth rugby family fun day. Well over 200 new and existing young players had arrived for an action-packed day, which saw the Newbridge and Dragons Community coaches put their skills to the test.
