Hobbs: “It was good to be finally out there!”

Dragons prop Sam Hobbs got his first taste of rugby under Head Coach Bernard Jackman last weekend after he came on as a replacement against Scarlets in the Anglo-Welsh Cup.

The 29-year-old has been out for the entirety of the 2017-18 season due to a long-standing knee issue that he had operated on, so following months of rehab he made his first appearance for the Welsh Region.

“I didn’t expect to be coming on at half-time but it was good to finally be out there; it’s been a long old slog of a rehab so I was pleased to get out there,” said Hobbs.

With 27 appearances in one season already under his belt, the loose-head prop has had to sit on the sidelines watching others take his position in the starting XV. “There’s been a bit of rotation with Brok (Harris) playing really well at loose-head, and the other boys have come in and done a good job as well, so I have had a little bit of a sniff against Scarlets and whether I get another taste of it or not is something for coaches.”

Hobbs continued; “There is really good competition and there’s a lot of us there - we seem to be pushing each other quite hard in the front row.”

Speaking about the new coaching regime that Jackman has employed Hobbs said: “It’s no secret that Bernard has come in and changed our attacking and Hendre (Marnitz) has come in with a defence system, so it has been hard trying to learn as much as you can in a notebook in the classroom as it’s all about getting on the training field.”

Following on from two games in the Anglo-Welsh Cup the Dragons return to the GUINNESS PRO14 championship, where they travel to take on Leinster at the RDS on Friday night. “There’s no tougher place to play in our league so we just have to go there with a nothing to lose attitude.”

The Dragons return to Rodney Parade in December to take on Ulster in the PRO14, on Friday 1st December KO 19:35. Tickets are already on sale for this clash and fans are urged to buy in advance by clicking here, or by calling 01633 674990.
