Hewitt looks ahead to final games of the season

Dragons wing Ashton Hewitt looks ahead to the final three games of the GUINNESS PRO14, as the Men of Gwent travel to Italy to take on Benetton and Zebre before returning to Wales to face Scarlets.

The 23-year old has made over 65 appearances for the Welsh Region since his debut in 2013 and was called into the 2016 Six Nations squad only for concussion to force him to pull out of training.

The Dragons academy product believes that he hasn’t had his finest season, but hopes to return to his best in time for the Wales Summer tour.

“This season has been frustrating having a couple of minor injuries here and there which have kept me out for a week or so and slowed momentum,” said Hewitt.

“So I need to stay fit and concentrate on what I need to do for the Dragons. It has been frustrating for me personally, as I haven’t gotten what I need to get out of this season, so I am just going to look forward to next year now after a good couple of games, to end on a high.”

Looking back at the Dragons performances over the past season, Hewitt added: “We’ve missed a lot of opportunities to win games that we definitely should’ve won.

“Everyone wants to finish strong…. If you watch Benetton they have a real positive effect on the game. They are becoming a lot more difficult and unpredictable to beat but these are the games that we should be winning. So, as we do every week we are prepping for our game with 100% belief that we can beat Benetton and we should put them away.”

On a personal note, the Newport born speedster remains positive, week in and week out. “I take it week by week and I go into every game thinking that we can win, I don’t really think about the past or the future too much,” Hewitt explained.

“We get need to get our training week correct for this weekend so that we know we can and we should beat our opposition. Granted that this season hasn’t gone that way but that’s my mentality anyway, as well as a lot of the boys."
