Lewis, a summer recruit from Bath Rugby, will line up at ten for the Guinness PRO14 derby with Ospreys at Rodney Parade on Sunday (kick-off 3pm) after impressing in recent weeks.
Interim Head Coach Ceri Jones has praised Lewis for the manner in which he has worked on his game away from the action to earn his spot back.
And the 26-year-old is now eager to hang onto a starting jersey in what he admits is a position that always comes under the microscope.
“I’ve worked hard and put the graft in to get back in the team,” said Lewis.
“You’re the link between the forwards and the backs so it can be a tough position. But you put yourself in there and give it a go.
“It was a bit frustrating for me earlier in the season, you know you can do it but it’s about delivering. I’ve put the graft in and gained the rewards in recent weeks.
“You sit down at the computer to learn as much as you can and I also spent time with the sports psychologist here and Alan (Kingsley) to work on the process and my method. It’s been really good to do that.
“My kicking game has been pretty good the last few seasons, but I had a bit of a blip and we all have them.
“You never want to lose your spot. But it is how you come back from it and taking the chance when you get the opportunity.”
With Lewis back pulling the strings at fly half, Dragons pushed Cardiff Blues all the way before Christmas until a late penalty denied them a share of the spoils.
However, Lewis has seen enough in recent times to firmly believe a Welsh derby success is around the corner.
“We went down to 14 men and it is tough then, but the boys worked hard and to go 16-16 with a few minutes left was a great shift,” he said.
“Our defensive game has got to be spot on against the Ospreys,” he added. “They have a few big quality players. However, as long as we carry on as we have we can do a good job.
“Like I said, I’m a pivot between the forwards and backs and I try to put us in the right areas and then unleash the backs when we can.
“Friday night in Cardiff it didn’t help with the conditions. We want to play a good running game, go coast to coast, so we will see how we go on Sunday.
“I’ve had two Welsh derby games with the Blues that haven’t gone our way. Now we face the Ospreys and Scarlets and it is about how we bounce back and pick up a ‘W’ in these games.
“A win would give us such confidence. I feel we are due a good win and as long as we get our processes right and our skill set is on point then it should be a good game this weekend.”
