The young blindside flanker or lock will turn his back on England in an attempt to force his way into the Wales set-up and is positive for the future prospects of the side.
Taylor started his rugby career with Worcester in 2014, being part of the side to win the British and Irish Cup. Moving to the Dragons, he intends to bring “carnage” in defense to force his way into the fiercely-contested back row.
How did the move to the Dragons come around?
“I went through the ranks of Worcester but I’ve always had Welsh in me. I was brought up in England but my mum’s side of the family are from Aberystwyth and have more to do with rugby. I played England under 20s but then after 4 years at Worcester, Bernard approached me and sold me the dream to come over. I’ve always supported Wales and wanted to try and play for Wales while growing up.”
Do you see yourself as a Lock or Flanker?
“Coming here, I had a chat with Bernard and Ceri, and they see me as a blindside flanker who can play lock. More second rows are being able to cover both. I found myself in the second row for the under 20s and I could call the lineouts. That’s something that I’m trying to bring here as well, being a flanker who can be a good option in the lineout.”
Where do you see your strengths as a player?
“I’ve felt that I’ve become better in defence. I’ve always liked to carry the ball, so I’m trying to be that option, with a bit more height, in the back row and lineouts.”
Pre-season games are coming soon, are you looking forward to them?
“Definitely. We have three pre-season games, so hopefully all the boys get a chance to show what they can do.”
Did you work with Ceri whilst you were at Worcester?
“He was my academy coach for two years at Worcester and so we’ve got quite a good close relationship. I think that’s what smoothed the ride coming over here. He’s asked me to try and bring out that sort of leadership and talking, as that was something I was very comfortable doing at Worcester. At the moment I’m getting to know the boys and am trying to bring that side out of me as well.”
What are your hopes here for the season and longer term?
“I want to come here and try to put my name on that 6 shirt. My first aim is to try to play every week, that’s all I’m really thinking about at the moment. I’d be happy if something comes off the back of that but the Dragons first.”
