Prop star Harris relishing front row battle

Prop star Brok Harris has revealed how the competition for places in the front row has fired his impressive early season form.

Ben Mottram | 20/09/2018

Front row ace Harris - who has now made 92 appearances for the region - has been a key performer for the Dragons in the opening weeks of the new Guinness PRO14 season.

Harris, 33, also showed his versatility in the away game against Leinster Rugby in Dublin – starting the game at loosehead and then returning as a replacement to play tighthead.

The battle for places is set to intensify this week with summer signing Aaron Jarvis pushing for a call-up.

And Harris - who joined from the Stormers in 2014 - could not be happier and revealed how he would also jump at the chance to represent Wales if that arose in the future.

“We have some good competition in the front row – and you can never have enough,” smiled Harris.

“I’m enjoying this season and happy to play both sides. Predominantly I will play loosehead, but last weekend I had to play tighthead and I can cover that.

“It’s not too hard to adjust, although the lineouts are different. You are at the back at tighthead and at the front on attack, then you swap on defence.

“It is not a major adjustment to swap sides, just in the scrums – you go left or right!

“I started out as tighthead back home, but when Bernard (Jackman) came in he preferred me to play loosehead. I was happy doing that.

“With the new laws with the bind it is much easier than in the older days when it was a free for all! Then it was difficult.”

On his Wales ambitions, Harris added: “I’m focussing on what is ahead and week to week. No more than that.

“My focus is on giving my best at the Dragons. If it (Wales call-up) comes it comes, if not I am enjoying being part of the Dragons squad. It is just nice to be playing.

“I would be open-minded to it. That is why we play the game, to compete at the highest level. I would give it a crack if the opportunity arises.”

Harris will be hoping to pack down with the Dragons on Saturday afternoon when Zebre Rugby arrive at Rodney Parade (kick-off 5.15pm).

And he revealed how he and others in the squad were still feeding off the energy of the summer recruits to ensure spirits were high.

“Our spirit is really good,” said Harris. “It's always difficult when you get new guys in, to get them blended in and in the mix. But from a personal point of view, I feel the squad is in a good place and very close.

“We are friends and there are no egos. We are trying to improve each other.

“Guys like Richard (Hibbard), Ross (Hibbard) and Aaron (Jarvis) have come in and want to do well. We are feeding off that energy.

“It’s a massive positive - it’s one team and we’re in a good place.”
