Wing wonder Hewitt signs new deal

11/04/2019

Ashton Hewitt – one of the most exciting talents in Welsh rugby – has today committed his future to Dragons by signing a new contract at the region.

Hewitt has joined Adam Warren, Lewis Evans and Matthew Screech in putting pen to paper on a deal to stay at Rodney Parade until at least 2021.

The 24-year-old speedster from Newport will make his long-awaited playing return next season after a shoulder injury ruled him out of the 2018/19 campaign.

Hewitt, who has scored 21 tries in 72 appearances for Dragons, is one of the most potent finishers in Welsh rugby with his electric pace and powerful running.

Hewitt came through the Academy ranks at Dragons and made his regional debut in 2013.

The wing has twice been called up by Wales, only for concussion to deny him in the 2017 Six Nations and then a shoulder injury forcing him to withdraw from the summer tour in 2018.

Head Coach Ceri Jones said: “We are delighted that Ashton has signed a new contract with us - it will be like having a new signing next season.

“Ashton has been extremely unfortunate with injury over the last 12 months, but he has worked extremely hard and diligently with his rehabilitation and we will see him back to his best next season.

“He is a player who can create opportunities out of nothing and is a clinical finisher. Ashton is also a leader for us, both on and off the field, who has the respect of the entire dressing room.

“Ashton is a fantastic example of home-grown Gwent talent who has come through our system and who wants to bring success to our region.

“He is excited about the future at Dragons and we’re excited to see him back in action next season.”
