Thomas backs Wales to bounce back

04/02/2019

Dragons Women prop Caryl Thomas believes Wales Women can bounce back from defeat to France when they meet Italy.

Rowland Phillips' side put in a determined showing against the French in Montpellier before the home side showed their class and physicality to come out on top 52-3. Robyn Wilkins scored Wales' only points with a penalty.

Prop Thomas, who, at 54 appearances is the most capped player in the Six Nations squad,, said: "We knew France were going to be a tough team and would put in a big performance. It was a difficult game, but it's a five-game tournament and now we have to look forward to Italy.

"We need to take the positives from France and look at the few things we need to tweak in order to put in a performance against Italy.

"What's great about the Six Nations is the games are week in, week out. There were positives which came out of the France game. Our line speed and pressure worked well, we just didn't do it consistently enough. We need to make a few tweaks to our set-piece.

"We pride ourselves on that, but it didn't work out. We have the confidence in the squad that we can turn things around. We're looking forward now."

Loosehead Thomas, a key figure in the Wales Women squad, added: "Hopefully we can get a win in Italy. They had a very strong performance against Scotland and were dominant in their ball carries.

"We know it will be another physical game, but it's always a strong battle with them. We need to go out there and set the precedent in the first five minutes.

"It's good to see young players come into the squad and take their opportunities, putting their hand up, and being physical.

"Off the pitch I guess I see my role as nurturing the young players in the squad and utilising my experience."
