REACTION | Missed opportunity for Dragons

23/03/2019

DRAGONS boss Ceri Jones lamented “moments of chaos” after seeing his side slip to a 29-20 derby defeat at the Ospreys.

The Dragons went down on the road again in the Guinness PRO14 after seeing a 17-10 half-time lead overturned at the Liberty Stadium.

Scrum-half Rhodri Williams and wing Hallam Amos scored interception tries but the Ospreys kept alive their hopes of Champions Cup qualification thanks to Dan Evans.

The former Dragons full-back scored the opener and then crossed for three more after the break as the Swansea side got reward for their dominance of territory and possession.

“It was a game that we could have won, quite simply,” said interim head coach Jones. “We weren’t as good as we wanted to be at the start but came back into it well with a bit of luck.

“But we have moments of chaos, when Jordan Williams collided with Jared Rosser and the Ospreys got themselves into the game and then we made poor reads defensively, either on the edge or through the middle.

“That let the Ospreys back into the game and we have to be more comfortable being in the lead and being able to close game out.

“We had an opportunity today and we didn’t take it, so I am disappointed. We haven’t got the elusive win that we wanted, so I am not a happy bunny.”

The Dragons now have a week off before returning for a South African double-header against the Kings and Cheetahs, then they finish with a Judgement Day clash with the Scarlets at Principality Stadium.

“There was lots of good instances in the game and a lot of individual performances were very good as well.

“Ross Moriarty came back and gave a really good performance, it was good to see Max Williams come to the fore and Taine Basham had really good moments.

“We’ve just got to get an 80-minute performance and today was a 60, 65-minute one. We have got to switch on for the whole game and close it out.”

The Dragons lost hooker Richard Hibbard at half-time because of a tight hamstring and Wales centre Tyler Morgan was forced off in the first half with what looks to be a serious injury to his right shoulder.
