Goodchild hits form at London Sevens

28/05/2019

Dragons wing Joe Goodchild was among the tries as Wales reached the semi-finals of the Challenge Trophy at the London Sevens.

Wales produced a much-improved overall display on the World Series as they prepare for Paris next weekend.

And Goodchild was to the fore as he grabbed a hat-trick of tries at the event with scores against Australia (26-10 defeat) and USA (28-26 defeat) on day one.

The 21-year-old also scored in a 17-0 win over Japan on day two before Wales saw their hopes of the final ended by Scotland in the last four (33-7 defeat).

“Scotland was a frustrating one because we really gifted them two first-half tries,” observed head coach Richie Pugh. “From there we didn’t really get into the rhythm of the performances we’d displayed in our first four games.”

“We will look back and reflect, and we’ll see that it has been a positive weekend,” continued Pugh, whose team now lies above Kenya and Japan in the rankings.

“We’ve picked up the most points out of all the bottom three teams, and the performances within those results have given us a lot to be pleased about.”

With the final action of the season moving to the French capital, the theme continues: there are no easy games on the World Series.

“We’ve got to make sure we recover well this week and that we’re ready to go again,” Pugh said. “We’ll pick ourselves up because you can’t just reflect on one game. We’re good to go again.”

We will look back and reflect, and we’ll see that it has been a positive weekend...
