Ryan praise for Wales call-ups

19/11/2019

Dean Ryan has praised the eight players who have been named in the Wales squad to face the Barbarians later this month.

Sam Davies, Ollie Griffiths, Leon Brown, Ashton Hewitt, Taine Basham, Elliot Dee, Aaron Wainwright and Ross Moriarty have all been called-up by new Wales boss Wayne Pivac in a 35-man squad.

They will now look to feature in the clash with the Barbarians at Principality Stadium on Saturday, November 30.

“I think every player at the Dragons is aspiring to play for Wales so we are naturally pleased for those who have been rewarded with call-ups,” he said.

“All those players who have sat on the fringes and are aspirational to play for Wales, they can do that by being consistently good here.

“I’m just hopeful that people continue to see the work that they are doing here that reflects their bravery to come to places like this, stay at places like this and try to give us a different trajectory.”

Ryan was also delighted for fly half Sam Davies who has returned to the international set-up after a move to Rodney Parade.

“Sam has made a brave move to come to a new club and define the trajectory of that club,” he added.

“Sometimes that puts him under a huge amount of pressure as a ten, but I think he has been tremendous in the way he has dealt with that and led the side.”

Ryan has also praised back row Taine Basham after his call-up and backed him to stay grounded despite his sudden rise into the international picture.

“I don’t need to keep Taine’s feet on the ground. I think we are doing that already and he is doing that," added Ryan.

“He is a great example of real potential in this region. My job is to realise that potential, and that is probably not in the next few weeks or months.

“I understand why the media and everyone else wants to see somebody before everyone else. But I am really happy with him and the opportunities we have given him.

“He probably needs to take a depth breath and see what he has learnt over the last few weeks.

“His development captures exactly what we are trying to do here. We want to get that right for Taine, for the region and for Wales."
