Ultimate XV: Openside Flanker

07/04/2020

The battle for the seven shirt starts NOW! Who is your pick at openside flanker in our Ultimate XV feature – in association with doopoll.

The votes were cast for blindside flanker yesterday with Dan Lydiate coming out on top – now who will join him?

Today we have selected six players to pick for the seven jersey – with Colin Charvis making a second appearance by public demand!

Remember, if you think someone else is deserving you can nominate them too and we will act! Just comment when you vote!

Everyone who signs up and votes will be entered into a prize draw for a Dragons jersey.

Which of these six nominations gets your vote:

Jason Forster (2003-2006): 73 appearances

All-action flanker Forster played his club rugby for Pontypridd, Newport and then the Dragons where he was a huge presence during his 73 appearances for the region. His biggest honour was getting capped by Wales – a week after beating the Barbarians 42-0 at Ashton Gate – on the 2004 tour to Argentina and South Africa. During his time with the Dragons he played for Wales Sevens in two World Cups and the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, Wales ‘A’ and Wales.

Ollie Griffiths (2014-Present): 73 appearances

Dynamic back row Ollie Griffiths made his debut for Dragons in 2014 against Ulster. A product of the Dragons Academy, the Newbridge-born forward impressed for Cross Keys and Newport before making the step up to regional level. During the 2014/15 season he was named captain of the Black and Ambers - their youngster skipper in history. Griffiths was called into the Wales Under-20 set-up after impressing at Rodney Parade and went on to captain his country against Scotland Under-20s in their 2014 Six Nations campaign. His eye-catching displays in the back row were rewarded with a call-up the senior Wales tour to Tonga and Samoa. He made his international debut against Tonga in Auckland in June 2017.

Nic Cudd (2012-Present): 130 appearances

Combative back row Nic Cudd began his career playing junior rugby for Pontiets RFC and later on Tumble RFC. Cudd would later join the Scarlets Academy in 2004, when he was 16-years-old, and in the summer of 2010 signed a development contract with the region as he worked his way into the senior set-up. Cudd moved to Dragons in 2012, making his debut against his former region, and went on to hit a century of appearances during the 2017/18 campaign. Carmarthen-born Cudd, known for his all-action and dynamic style, has also played for Wales Under-16s, Under-18s, Under-19 and Under-20s.

Richard Parks (2007-2009) 30 appearances

Pontypridd-born Parks enjoyed a career that saw him play at Newport, Pontypridd, Celtic Warriors, Leeds Tykes and Perpignan before linking up with Dragons in 2007. Capped four times by Wales, after being forced to retire from rugby in 2009 he has taken on some of the world's toughest challenges in unforgiving environments.

Jamie Ringer (2003-2009) 140 appearances

A flanker, capable of playing both blind and open-side, he started playing in the Welsh premiership for Cardiff RFC at the age of 19. Ringer moved to Bridgend in 1999 before joining Neath in 2002. Ringer's time at Neath was short as he joined Dragons in 2003. During his time with the region he gained over 100 caps and scored 7 tries. Ringer earned youth caps for Wales U18s, U19s and U21s. He also won caps for Wales 'A' and Wales 7s before two senior caps against Japan in 2001.

Colin Charvis (2006-2009): 51 appearances

Former Wales international Charvis arrived at Rodney Parade in 2006 – after spells at Swansea, Tarbes and Newcastle - and clocked up over half a century of appearances for the region. Former Wales captain Charvis also made 96 Test appearances and represented the British & Irish Lions in 2001.
