Dragons looking forward to coming home

28/08/2020

Forwards Coach Mefin Davies admits the Dragons are looking forward to being back on home soil after almost six months away from Rodney Parade.

Dragons will tackle play-off chasing Scarlets on Saturday in the final game of the region’s campaign in the Guinness PRO14.

After an extended season following the suspension of action due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Davies believes the players are enjoying being back in the environment.

“It will be a challenge against Scarlets. They’re a difficult team, they like to play and we know they have plenty of talent,” he said.

“But we are entering a new period here and we are all looking forward to playing at home for the first time in a while.

“Playing at Rodney Parade is a positive for to use and we are expecting to build on the game against Ospreys.

“It has been such a strange time, but the players have come back in great shape.

"We have come back and everyone knows the tough situation in the world at the moment and the need to respect the situation, to be safe.

“But I think everyone in the world, not just in Wales, is proud and relieved about the start of rugby again."

Reflecting on the derby day draw with Ospreys, Davies admitted it had been a new experience for all involved.

“It was a totally different experience,” he said. “I have watched a lot of the games during re-start and it has been tough times for everyone.

“It was a bit of a shock because the stadium was so quiet. You had fake crowd noise in the background or music and then when the kickers were going for a goal everything stopped.

“Before the game you could hear everyone training and warming up, so a totally different experience I must admit.”

Davies is also keen for Dragons to not look too far ahead and not be distracted by talk of the European showdown with Bristol Bears next month.

“Of course, that is a big game, but what is important now is we take it one game at a time,” he said.

“We need to build on the game against the Ospreys, where we should have won but we didn’t lose after they had a red card.

“We are just concentrating on a better performance against the Scarlets and moving forward again.”
