Knoyle hungry for more action

13/08/2020

Scrum half Tavis Knoyle believes his appetite for rugby is as strong as ever as he closes in on a memorable milestone.

Knoyle, 30, will clock up his 50th appearance for the Men of Gwent the next time he runs out for the region.

The former Wales international has enjoyed an impressive career in Wales and when he joined Dragons he became only the third player - at the time - to feature for all four regions.

But speaking on the Unlocking Your Mind podcast, Knoyle revealed he had no plans to hang up his boots and instead had plenty of ambitions left in the game.

“I’d love to be able to play for another four years at least. I’d be really pleased with that,” said Knoyle. “My ambition is to start for the Dragons as much as possible. I’m still chipping away.

“Rhodri (Williams) has been captain so it is all about working hard and when I get my opportunity I look to take it.

“Last season I had one of the best years since leaving the Scarlets and enjoyed my rugby. If you can get on the team sheet then everything else falls into place.

“Nothing beats when you are playing well and the team is winning. That is my challenge - to play as much as possible still.”

And Knoyle believes the secret to his rugby longevity is a simple one.

“Work hard and enjoy it,” he said. “There really is no substitute for hard work.

“When I joined the Dragons I wanted to play and push myself. That is still the case now.

“I’ve enjoyed it here. The boys are awesome. My partner (Jolene) has been very supportive, with going away to play and train. That plays a big part in it.

“I go hard in training, eat really well and when I come home I rest and spend time with the family. My only regret is that I don’t follow that path sooner. You work it out as your career progresses.”

And reflecting on his lockdown, Knoyle revealed a new arrival kept the family busy.

“We’ve just had another child so it’s been a busy time with night feeds and work on the home too. It’s been productive,” he added.

“Don’t get me wrong, it’s been a difficult time for so many people. But we kept ourselves to ourselves and looked after our little family.”
