Hewitt: Positive mood for Euro opener

11/12/2020

Wing Ashton Hewitt admits there is a positive mood around the Dragons camp ahead of the Heineken Champions Cup opener this weekend.

After just under ten years away, Dragons return to the top tier of European competition on Saturday evening at Rodney Parade when they tackle Wasps (kick-off 5.30pm).

Dean Ryan’s men go into the game on the back of successive Guinness PRO14 victories over Benetton rugby and Glasgow Warriors.

And with the Wales internationals back in raining at Ystrad Mynach, Hewitt admits the team ‘cannot wait for a taste of it’.

“We’ve come off the back of another away win, so everyone is confident, everyone is buzzing,” he said.

“I think it’s a perfect time for us to have our internationals back and the mood is just sky high at the minute to be fair.

“We’ve got a few characters back and obviously boys who can add to everything that we’ve been doing.

“The vast majority of our squad wouldn’t have played at this level before; it will be the highest level a lot of us have played and everyone is just really looking forward to it.

“It’s a new experience. Dean (Ryan) is keen on us just really enjoying it and embracing it and taking it all in.

“Like I said, there is a real positive mood, there is a lot of energy around the place and we can’t wait to get a taste of it.”
