Maddocks: Rosser return a big boost

10/02/2020

Backs Coach Barry Maddocks has praised the impact of returning wing ace Jared Rosser – and insists the best is yet to come from the wide man.

Rosser, 22, endured a frustrating start to the season as a leg injury on the eve of the new campaign saw him sidelined until the Boxing Day clash with Cardiff Blues.

The Dragons Academy ace has quickly found his feet scoring three tries in four games – including a stunning brace away to Castres Olympique in the European Challenge Cup.

And Maddocks believes hard-working Rosser – who now has 16 tries in 44 games for Dragons – will only get better at Rodney Parade.

“It’s great to have Jared back,” said Maddocks. “He was a bit unlucky this year with the freak injury that he picked up in training which kept him out for a period.

“I’ve been fortunate to be with him since he has come into the group, some three years ago now, and I’ve seen him grow and develop during that period.

“His finishing ability is exceptional. The first try against Castres in Europe, where he outsprinted the pretty much everyone on the pitch to score, was special. Anyone would be proud of that.

“The second try we thought we had gone the wrong way, there was probably four defenders that side and Jared on his own. But it was a different type of finish and he finished it off exceptional well."

Rosser will be hoping to line up against Benetton Rugby on Saturday (kick-off 7.35pm) as Guinness PRO14 action resumes.

And Maddocks is tipping the former Wales Under-20s to continue to improve throughout the second part of this season.

“Jared understands he still has bits to work on his game,” said Maddocks.

“He is working on his defensive positional work at time and high ball work. But that has all come on in leaps and bounds the last few years.

“What he does bring is his finishing ability, he is a big physical specimen, and he can carry the ball well. He has loads of energy when he is in training and is getting better.”
