Davies determined to kick-on again

18/07/2020

Fly half ace Sam Davies has vowed to kick-on from an eye-catching debut season at Dragons - insisting: “It’s pointless coming in and being a one-season wonder”.

Davies has enjoyed a sensational first 12 months at Rodney Parade and clocked up an impressive 144 points in 16 games before the Guinness PRO14 and European season was halted.

Dramatic match winning kicks against the likes of the Scarlets and Cheetahs tell only half the story with Davies pulling the strings for Dragons in the ten jersey.

The 26-year-old admits his move from Ospreys has worked out well, but he is also eager to not just stop there.

“It has gone well but it is not about resting on my laurels now,” said Davies, speaking at the Evening with Dragons charity event. “It is about kicking on. It’s pointless coming in and being a one-season wonder.

“We’ve got to take learnings from what has been a pretty decent first year at Dragons and put them into the rest of this season and next.

“I’ve really enjoyed myself this season,” he added. “We were a close group before lockdown and throughout that time we kept it going and kept in touch.

“We had catch-ups as players and the closeness that we have got is something we need to build on and develop when we bring new people into the group.”

And reflecting on his own lockdown experience, Davies admits he has emerged with a new outlook as he looks to the future.

“It has made me appreciate what I’ve got in life and given me time to think about life after rugby,” he said.

“I am going to be doing some coaching when grassroots rugby starts back up and hopefully a University course too alongside rugby.

"It’s trying to make the best out of a bad situation and you appreciate the little things, like being able to go out with mates for a beer. When it is taken away you realise what is gone.

“When you are stuck in the house for long periods it makes you value those little things more.”
