Dragons take first steps back

07/07/2020

The Dragons have returned to the region’s Ystrad Mynach training base as preparations continue for a proposed return to Guinness PRO14 action next month.

The playing squad are back for the first time in three months for Stage One of return to training, under strict guidelines from government and health officials, as well as the club’s medical staff and WRU.

In Stage One of training, players are only permitted to take part in strength and conditioning and skills sessions while adhering to social distancing in small groups.

All players and staff travel to training independently and are temperature checked before entering the site; entry is only granted if they have also completed the necessary paperwork online before arrival.

Other measures include training with staggered starts and a one-way system in operation throughout the training base. Players are not permitted to use any facilities other than the gym and outdoor pitches.

Changing rooms, meeting rooms, the kitchen and recovery facilities remain off-limits during Stage One, with additional temporary facilities installed outside.

The region’s strength and conditioning team and medical staff are on site to ensure all protocols are adhered to while daily cleaning processes, to maintain high hygiene standards, are in place.

Dean Ryan, Director of Dragons Rugby, said: “There is now a new-look environment and staff have worked tirelessly since lockdown began to ensure everything has been put in place for the squad to return.

“It’s exciting to move forwards and we are now be working towards moving to Stage Two and beyond ahead of the proposed return to action in August.”

James Chapron, General Manager at Dragons, added: “Creating a safe environment for players and staff to return to has been our top priority and wide-ranging measures have been implemented across the site.

“We’re grateful to the team at Caerphilly Council for their support and helping facilitate our return.”
