Ultimate XV: Rod Snow

31/03/2020

Here's a closer look at the Dragons nominee in the loosehead prop category of the Wales All Star Ultimate XV … Rod Snow.

Rod Snow took on almost iconic status at Rodney Parade during his eight years with Newport RFC and two with the Dragons.

A fearsome figure presenting an enormous challenge to the opposition, Snow played professionally for 11 years, starting in South Africa and winding up in Wales.

He spent nearly a decade playing for Newport RFC and is the highest-scoring prop in Newport’s history, crossing the line 30 times in 190 games played. He was later inducted into the Newport Rugby Hall of Fame.

Born Gerald Arthur Rod Snow, he began his senior club rugby with the Newfoundland amateur club team Dogs RFC. He went on to play professionally in South Africa for Eastern Province before joining Newport in 1996.

Snow made a total number of 190 appearances for Newport RFC before joining the Dragons for the 2003/04 season.

On the international stage Snow earned 62 caps for Canada between 1995 and 2007 and also featured for the Barbarians in 1996 against Wales.

Snow appeared in four Rugby World Cups — 1995 in South Africa, 1999 in Wales, 2003 in Australia and 2007 in France — the most of any prop in World Cup history.

In 2012 he retired from all levels of rugby and said of his time at Rodney Parade: "It was a difficult decision, it's been an honour and privilege to play for Newport and the Dragons.

Former Dragons chief executive Andy Marinos added at the time: "I cannot speak highly enough of Rod. He is a player you always want in your side. He will be sorely missed."
