Captain Rhodri Williams has revealed the squad are staying connected and positive during the COVID-19 outbreak – and urged supporters to stay safe during these unprecedented times.
Scrum half Williams and his team-mates are currently following individually tailored training programmes away from the region’s Ystrad Mynach training base.
For Williams, 26, that means more time now spent at home with partner Jamie-Jane and their two dogs, Charlie and Hudson.
The Swansea-born number nine admits the outbreak of the virus and constantly evolving situation around the globe has put sport into perspective over the last few weeks.
However, he admitted the squad still needed to stay on top of fitness levels with the Guinness PRO14 and European seasons both currently suspended indefinitely.
“It’s obviously a very difficult time for everyone,” said Williams.
“Sport is important to all of us and a huge part of our lives, but that is really put into perspective when you see what is going on at home and abroad. Health is at the forefront of our minds and staying well.
“As a squad, we all have our individual training plans to work to and fitness to keep on top of,” he added.
“I’m lucky in that I’ve a good mate with his garage converted into a gym about 200 yards away from home so I can go there and train alone. I’ve also got my dogs who keep me fit with plenty of walks.
“It’s old school training and we’ve got to keep doing it for when games return, whenever that might be.
“Thanks to the power of technology and social media we’ve all stayed in touch as a squad and our first group meeting on Wednesday was good fun. We’re staying connected and keeping spirits up.”
Reflecting on the season to date, Williams has a positive outlook on the vision at the region and believes his decision to sign a new long-term contract has already been vindicated.
“We have got to be happy with how it has gone,” he said.
“We’ve learnt something from every game, win or lose, and taken a step in the right direction.
“Nobody is getting carried away, we still have a long way to go and this is a long-term plan. We can’t get over excited with what we have achieved.
“The reason I re-signed here is because I am 100percent behind that journey and moving Dragons forward. I do believe in the vision.
“We know where we want to go, but patience is crucial. We’ve made strides but Dean (Ryan) has kept our feet firmly on the ground.”
The future of this season remains in the balance and nobody can know when rugby will return.
However, for Williams the thought of a playing return to Rodney Parade is a huge motivating factor.
And he has made a direct appeal to fans to stay safe and following the guidance in the coming weeks and months.
“You need motivation at times like this and the thought of getting back out a Rodney Parade and playing again does drive you forward. I’m sure fans are looking forward to coming back home too,” he said.
“Training on your own can be difficult so you look forward and getting back out playing with the boys is on your mind.
“We’re all looking forward to playing, but right now the health and well-being of everyone is the most important factor. It’s massively important we all listen to the advice we are being given.
“The message to fans is simple - stay safe and look out for each other,” he added. “Listen to the authorities, be patient and understanding, and we’ll see you all soon.”
