Ryan praise for precise Dragons

29/11/2020

Boss Dean Ryan praised a precise and patient display from his Dragons as they returned to Guinness PRO14 action with a bag with victory at Benetton Rugby.

Ashton Hewitt, Jamie Roberts and Rhodri Williams grabbed tries at Stadio Comunale di Monigo as Dragons secured a big win in Northern Italy.

And Ryan was delighted with the manner of the performance as his team returned to rugby for the first time in almost a month in style.

“The win was always going to give us momentum, but I just felt the manner of the first half hour was really good,” he said.

“I thought we were really precise, played in the right areas of the field and were patient.

“We didn’t get many start points in their half, but we stayed in that kicking contest and then when we did we have opportunities we were really precise.

“You saw that with Ashton (Hewitt) making a break. That was something we had worked on.

“Towards the end I thought we looked comfortable,” he added. “They were always going to throw the kitchen sink at us, but aside from Sam missing some kicks, that on another day we would have expected him to get, we had full control of the game.

“A side more used to playing and winning probably could have pushed on for a bonus point. But we’ll take the win and we will look forward to preparing for next week."

Dragons showed real composure to claim a first win in Treviso since 2015 and now travel to Glasgow Warriors next Saturday eager to build that momentum.

“We understand what it is we are trying to do,” said Ryan. “We make mistakes, but I think now we recognise them as mistakes instead of seeking different answers.

“We recognise that we have got to go back and be better at something rather than do something differently.

“That is really powerful for the players out there because they can feel in control. Today was a great example of that.

“Now our challenge is to go away again and see if we can get something in Glashow.”
