Ryan: Robust Griffiths can shine at top

23/11/2020

Dragons boss Dean Ryan believes Ollie Griffiths can be an ‘incredible international player’ if he can string robustness together with his all-action game, writes Gavin Barrett.

Following a lengthy lay-off, talismanic back row Griffiths has made a superb return for the region this season.

His dynamic ball carrying and high-class breakdown work has been a constant thorn in the side for the opposition in games with Ulster and Munster.

And Ryan claims the 25-year-old from Newbridge - who has been limited to a solitary Test appearance for Wales in 2017 - can translate that form onto the highest stage if he can string games together.

“Ollie is coming back from a prolonged period of absence and he has hit the ground running,” said Ryan.

“I honestly believe he is an incredible international player, if he can string robustness together into his game.

“I don’t think the future changes for Ollie. Neither do the conversations with Wayne (Pivac) and we’ve been fairly aligned on that.

“He has to be robust week to week and he knows that’s his challenge. When he does, he’s an incredible player.

“Ollie is a really high-class individual who has to get some game time under his belt in terms of double figure games back-to-back. If he does that, he’s quite capable of dominating at international level.”
