Tackling loneliness & isolation with Re-engage

16/11/2020

Dragons Community are striving to reduce loneliness and social isolation amongst older people across the region thanks to an exciting new long-term partnership with Re-engage.

Re-engage are committed to fighting loneliness so that people are able to have social lives and friendship however old they are.

The charity works hard to inspire and enable meaningful connections and shared experiences within communities across the UK for people over 75 facing loneliness and social isolation.

The Dragons Community team are now working alongside Re-engage to launch Active Together Groups – delivered by volunteers to help participants stay active and meet new people.

In response to COVID-19, Re-engage have also created Call Companions  - a free, telephone befriending service open to any older people who would like to receive a regular, friendly phone call during the crisis and beyond.

Gavin Stewart, Project Manager at Re-engage, said: “Being an avid rugby fan myself, it’s great that we’ve been able to form a community partnership with Dragons.

“The community team at Dragons do a huge amount of work to support a variety of people across South Wales and I’m excited to create groups with the region to help reduce loneliness and social isolation in people aged 75 and over.”

Dragons and Re-engage will be launching the new partnership with a shared learning event, which is also set to include support from the first team at Dragons.

Gareth Sullivan, Inclusion Officer at Dragons, said: “As the ageing population continues to grow, so does the epidemic of loneliness among older people. Social isolation and loneliness are more than an emotional experience, they have huge mental and physical health implications

“Re-engage and Dragons are committed to tackling this problem together by helping older people to re-engage with their communities through regular social contact, giving them a lifeline of friendship and, vitally, something to look forward to.”
