Ryans targets right balance from team

10/02/2021

Boss Dean Ryan admits it is vital Dragons seek a better balance to their play when they battle Edinburgh in the Guinness PRO14 at Rodney Parade on Friday evening (kick-off 7.35pm).

Dragons are looking to bounce back from defeat at the hands of Connacht as they face a second successive Friday night under the lights in Newport.

The Director of Dragons Rugby was disappointed by the manner of the loss last week and now expects a positive reaction after a week of hard graft at Ystrad Mynach in preparation.

“We were disappointed last week, there is no point saying anything else,” he said. “I think we have got to get a better balance too our game. At times we tried, or we were forced ourselves, to try and play.

“The pitch is heavy and I think Connacht did a good job of playing a bit, turning us, playing a bit, turning us.

“I don’t think we got that balance right in our game and we lacked a bit of rhythm that we would normally associate with our performances.

“I would definitely want to see that variety in our attack and also a bit of energy in our attack building into this week.

“I think it’s important that we react (to last week),” he added. “I don’t think it’s a secret that I was pretty disappointed with how we come out of a very long spell.

“I just don’t think we showed the best of ourselves. We’ve got to go again, we’ve got to learn and we’ve got to lift our energy to get into this run of games and start making things turn our way.”

Ahead of the game Ryan has also revealed he faces some selection calls with the likes of Harrison Keddie joining those in being ruled out.

“We are low on numbers at the moment - I think that is fairly obvious,” he added.

“Back row is a concern and I think we will be look at how we can create opportunities. We might be able to get somebody in because we really are low there.

“Harrison Keddie came off with concussion which just adds to the Taine Basham, Ollie Griffiths, Aaron Wainwright, Ross Moriarty challenge.

“We will see over the next few days, but we are going to have to look at how we support that area and keep us moving.”

We’ve got to go again, we’ve got to learn and we’ve got to lift our energy to get into this run of games and start making things turn our way...
