Ryan: We must be critical of ourselves

09/01/2021

Boss Dean Ryan insisted his Dragons needed to look hard at themselves after a ‘tough derby month’ of action in the Guinness PRO14.

Dragons lost out 28-20 to Ospreys at Rodney Parade on Saturday evening to finish the festive period without registering a league win.

Ryan’s men have been in contention in all three games with their regional rivals, but have come out on the wrong side of results.

And as they look for a change in fortunes, the Director of Dragons Rugby believes that must look at their own performances for answers and realise a lack of accuracy at key times has hurt them.

“The first place we need to look is at ourselves,” said Ryan. “This has been our time to have a tough derby month. Looking at ourselves through a critical lens is very important right now.

“I felt in the first half (against Ospreys) we didn’t get enough pressure on people like (Mat) Protheroe, they were allowed to dominate that game.

“The damage was not huge, but the second half when we looked to ramp up the ambition we just weren’t accurate enough.

“We had plenty of time in their half, plenty of opportunities, but we weren’t sharp enough or don’t have enough quality on deck at the moment.

“They go once into our half and score and suddenly the whole dynamic of the game changes.

“We work constantly at getting better, whoever is on the field, and we will continue to do that,” he added.

“We have to put these games in context. Was everything wonderful last season because we won two games in the last minute?

“Derbies are one-score games and we have got to be better at making it land our way.

“We were quite fortunate in a couple of games last year; this year it is our turn to not have that fortune go for us. But we have got to try and take fortune out of it and be better.”
