Davies: Titanic effort to claim victory

22/03/2021

Playmaker Sam Davies hailed a titanic effort from his team-mates as they defeated Glasgow Warriors in the Guinness PRO14 and admitted: I’m proud to be a Dragon.

Davies scored 16 points in the league clash at Principality Stadium as Dragons won 26-19 – and was later named the Guinness player-of-the-match.

However, the fly half insisted it was a true team effort as Dragons produced a stunning late rear-guard to even deny Warriors a losing bonus point in the Welsh capital.

It was a result that left the two teams level in conference A and with it all to play for next weekend in the race for fourth spot.

"It was a titanic effort from us at the end,” said Davies.

“We'd done our homework, we knew we had to stop them getting a bonus point to stay alive next week, and the boys dug deep at the end.

"We worked out the ramifications of all the results and we're in with a shout next week, luckily for us they didn't take the (penalty) points and our defence held so strong.

"We know we're a good side in the second half and our moments would come, it was far from perfect but the fact we're winning games now is credit to the boys and coaches.

"It was extremely chaotic out there at times, but so enjoyable to be out there with my team-mates and us putting our bodies on the line.

“I'm so happy and proud to be a Dragon because that was something special."

Dragons will now face Edinburgh in Cardiff next Sunday (kick-off 2pm) and will know they must better Glasgow’s result against Benetton to move into fourth spot.

Davies said: “We’re in with a shout – that was what we wanted to come away with from this game.

“We have got to replicate what we did against Glasgow and be more accurate. We know we need to win and get the maximum points.

“It was a physical match against Glasgow and I was fortunate to get the man-of-the-match, there were a few candidates,” he added.

“I could list all the boys who have put their body on the line for the team.

“We have got so much respect for each other and we are leaving it all out there.

“From one to 15 and the bench, everyone was putting in collisions, everyone was putting their body on the line. Credit to the boys.

“I’m just proud to be a Dragon and we go into next week looking for another win.’
