Ryan ready to give Rio a run

05/05/2021

Boss Dean Ryan has spoken about his desire to see as much of rising star Rio Dyer in the Guinness PRO14 Rainbow Cup.

Speedster Dyer flew over the whitewash to complete a superb team move in the Round One victory over Scarlets at Rodney Parade.

The 21-year-old, a product of the Dragons Academy, has also already grabbed a league try this term – dotting down against Ulster at Principality Stadium last month.

And Director of Dragons Rugby Ryan is keen to the see the young wing now use the Rainbow Cup to showcase his searing pace and undoubted talent.

“You look at the decision to bring Aneurin (Owen) in, the decision to bring Ben Carter, Josh Reynolds and Rio in too. They all have got decent PRO14 experience over the last three or four months,” he said.

“We now want to cement that with some successive selections and Rio is definitely one we’re looking to play as many of these games as possible.

“It is his pace that excites me,” added Ryan.

“But what I also liked about him when he came in was that we challenged him around some of his foundations.

“It is very difficult sometimes for a developing player to come in and want to showcase the one area we know is their super strength.

“As a coach you’re probably looking for the five or six areas that allows him to be stable.

“What we are communicating with the developing players is that if you can create stability in that senior environment then you will get more security of being involved week after week.

“That is where you grow your experiences and that is where you get more chances to show what you can do.

“Definitely the excitement around Rio’s pace is something that we are keen to get out on the field and we’re looking forward to seeing more of him.”
