Ultimate physical test for Rowlands

06/11/2021

Dragons lock Will Rowlands admits he will face the ‘ultimate physical test’ when he starts for Wales against South Africa on Saturday (kick-off 5.30pm).

Rowlands steps into the shoes of the injured captain Alun Wyn Jones to partner Adam Beard in the second row.

And the giant lock is determined to bring his own game against the world champions in Cardiff.

He said: “I think some of the things he (Jones) brings to the side are leadership and experience, but also a lot of physicality in how he plays the game.

“That’s something I like to think I can bring to the team so I’ll just try to do that on the weekend.

“In terms of leadership there are plenty of experienced guys who can take that mantle.

“Jonathan Davies is taking up the captaincy and he did a great job for us doing that in the summer.

“I think South Africa is the ultimate physical test. It is very different to playing New Zealand last week,” he added.

“Their traditional strengths are a big forward pack, a big aerial game, scrum and line-out. It will be a challenge in that area.

“You need to get yourself up for physical confrontation. Yes, that confrontation steps up at Test level but if anything, knowing you are going to compete against the best makes me excited.

“I think everyone is fully aware of what the challenge is and personally, I am very focused on what I need to do to contribute as well as I can to the team.”

Rowlands came on for Jones in the first half against New Zealand after the captain was forced off following his tackle on Jordie Barrett. It was his 11th Welsh cap with his 12th set to come against South Africa.

On the Springboks, Rowlands added: “They are world champions for a reason. “Injuries are the nature of the game. There are unfortunate circumstances for some people that give opportunities for others.

“I am very excited about the prospect of playing, getting some starts, and making the most of it.

“South Africa have a lot of strength in depth and can deliver on the game plan that they bring.

“We have a different game plan and have our focus on trying to nullify them so that we can play how we want to.”

I am very excited about the prospect of playing, getting some starts, and making the most of it...
