Dragons handed Moriarty injury boost

07/04/2022

Dragons have been handed an injury boost after boss Dean Ryan confirmed Wales international Ross Moriarty is not set to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Moriarty was forced off in some discomfort in the first half of the United Rugby Championship fixture with Cell C Sharks in South Africa.

However, Ryan has now reported a positive outcome after revealing that, although the back row tyro will miss a reunion with his former club in Europe, he could make his return before the season ends.

“We’ve had good news,” said Ryan. “Structurally everything is okay.

“We think he has had some damage to a nerve, which is extremely painful, and he felt a pop in his knee which is very stressful for him.

“The damage to the nerve is significant, but we had all been holding our breath waiting for bad news.

“We are still in a period of finding out because nerve damage isn’t as straight forward as something else, but the news that structurally his knee is in good shape is good news.

“Absolutely I do expect him to play again this season,” he added. “We don’t know everything yet, but the fact it is not structural is something we can work through.

"Every one of us was really concerned about what the outcome would be for Ross. To see the significant pain he was in, anyone watching TV would have expressed concern about what was next.

"We are relieved it's not what we all feared and as we get through the next week or so we will get a better understanding of when he will come back."

Absolutely I do expect him to play again this season... the fact it is not structural is something we can work through...
