Scrum half Williams signs new contract

14/04/2022

Dragons are pleased to announce that scrum half Rhodri Williams has committed his future to the region by signing a new deal with the Men of Gwent.

Williams – recently called up by Wales for the Six Nations campaign - joined the region from Bristol Bears in 2018 and has gone on to make 74 appearances, scoring 13 tries.

The 28-year-old has now agreed an extension to remain at Rodney Parade as the squad continues to take shape for the 2022/23 season.

Dean Ryan, Director of Dragons Rugby, said: “We’re very pleased that Rhodri has agreed new terms and will remain with us.

“There is going to be change here and it is important we identify those players we want to stay and be part of what we are building. Rhodri is very much a part of that, from captain, to first choice to fighting it out for a place.

“Rhodri is a great person, a senior player who has captained the team and who you want to build the squad around. We’re excited to see his impact in the coming seasons and that he is coming with us."

Williams – who has captained Dragons in recent seasons - started his career with Llandovery before winning selection for Scarlets, where he would play between 2011 and 2016.

He won Wales Under-20 honours in the 2013 Six Nations and went on to make his full senior Wales debut against Tonga in November 2013.

Williams also represented the Barbarians against England in 2018 and again in the summer of 2019, scoring a second half try as a replacement.

“I’ve enjoyed my four seasons at Dragons, really feel we are building something here and it is now about putting it on the field," said Williams.

“It’s been a tough season with results, but we’re all looking forward to this derby period now and looking to finish strongly.

“I’m still only 28 and have ambitions in the game that I feel I can achieve at Dragons.”
