Hanrahan benefits from French lesson

26/02/2022

New signing JJ Hanrahan believes his spell in the Top 14 with ASM Clermont Auvergne has made him a better player – and he is determined to show that when he makes the switch to Dragons.

Hanrahan will move to Rodney Parade this summer on a long-term contract.

And the versatile playmaker – who can operate at fly half, full back or centre – believes he is a better player after moving from Munster.

“I’ve learnt a lot,” said Hanrahan, who made over 150 appearances for Munster in two spells. “It’s been a great experience.

“One thing has been getting away from Munster, because I was very comfortable with the structures there.

“I’ve come to Clermont and it’s a different philosophy and different DNA.

“The way rugby is played in French is quite unique, so it has been a learning experience and you find different ways to skin a cat.

“It’s been a great learning for me and hopefully it is something I can potentially bring to Dragons.

“I’m excited to be joining,” he added. “With it being a long-term deal, it means I can really bite my teeth into it and be part of the group.

“I started from conversations with Dean (Ryan) and his passion, drive and commitment to where to wants to get the region really came through.

“I also did my own research, looked at the training facilities and the region.

“For me there is a really good mix of world class internationals and some really quality young players.

“Having that mix is really important in a group. Hopefully I can come in and add some value so we can take the region to new heights in future years.

“Keep supporting the boys,” he concluded. “The fans are everything, in terms of getting it going, so I am looking forward to getting there and playing in front of them at Rodney Parade.”
