Women U18s Return to Competitive Action

06/02/2022

The Dragons Women U18s impressed in their return to competitive action in round one of the Regional Festival at the Centre of Excellence in Ystrad Mynach on Sunday.

The girls of Gwent managed a victory, one draw and two losses in four highly contested contests in what was an impressive start for a new group only put together in January.

Dragons faced Welsh rivals Cardiff Rugby, RGC, Ospreys and Scarlets as the girls battled it out for bragging rights and a potential place in the Women’s national squad selected by Head Coach Liza Burgess at the end of February.

They started the tournament against the girls from the capital and despite a competitive match-up it was Cardiff who claimed a 12-0 victory.

The Dragons managed to get their first points on the board in game two where their solid defence saw them claim a 0-0 draw with RGC.

The girls led by captain Leanna Maybank improved as the day went on and claimed their first win in game three, their defence once again helping them to a 5-0 victory over the Ospreys, while the Dragons finished the day with a closely fought 5-10 loss against the Scarlets. Both Dragons tries came from centre Savannah Picton-Powell.

The girls will return to action next week in festival number two at Merthyr RFC before the third and final festival takes place a week later at the Cardiff Arms Park.
