Rising star Owen signs extension

12/01/2022

Dragons are delighted to announce highly-rated centre Aneurin Owen has agreed a new long-term contract extension with his home region.

The 21-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Welsh rugby.

A product of the Dragons Academy, Owen joins fellow graduates Rio Dyer, Chris Coleman, Josh Reynolds and Luke Yendle in today agreeing fresh terms.

Dean Ryan, Director of Dragons Rugby, said: “We’re really pleased that Aneurin has signed a new contract with us and underlined his commitment in the long-term.

“Aneurin is a young player at the start of his career who is very keen to learn and who we are excited to develop in the seasons ahead of him.

“The growth of the region will be underpinned by prospering youngsters coming through our Academy system and Aneurin is a great example of that.”

Owen has been an ultra-consistent performer for the region since making his debut against Bordeaux-Begles in the Heineken Champions Cup last season – becoming the 300th player capped by the region at the same time.

The talented centre made a first league start against Leinster in February 2021 and has gone on to become a key member of the backline at Dragons, making 24 appearances to date and scoring two tries.

The former Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw pupil was a consistent performer for Wales Under-20s in their Six Nations campaign in 2019 and went to the World Rugby Junior Championships in France in the summer of 2019.

Owen was named as an attached player to Wales in the summer of 2021, training with the senior squad ahead of Tests with Canada and Argentina.

“I’ve come through the Academy and it’s a team I grew up supporting, so I’m obviously delighted to sign and stay. I’m just looking forward to the future,” he said.

“I’m still learning so much and really enjoy it here. I’ve been getting game time and I’m constantly learning - that is the focus. I feel this is the place to keep growing and getting better.

”It’s been my ambition to play for Dragons for a long time, so to do that and then re-sign to carry on is really exciting,” he added.

“There’s a group of us that have come through the system together and we all push each other on to get better. Now it is about keep getting better and I know I can do that right here.”
