Lloyd looks forward to big Italian job

04/07/2022

Young Dragons scrum half Morgan Lloyd insists Wales Under-20s can raise their game even higher when they face Italy in a huge clash in the Six Nations Summer Series.

Wales return to action on Wednesday (kick-off 7pm UK) when they play the hosts – knowing they can wrap up first place in the group with a win over the Azzurrini.

Byron Hayward’s men have so far defeated Scotland 45-15 and overcome Georgia 30-24 at Stadio Monigo in Treviso.

Wales are sitting pretty at the top of Pool B and face Italy in what is essentially a semi-final before cross pool final games next week.

“Heads are high, we feel we can push on again from the Georgia game. We’re looking forward to that Italian game,” said Lloyd.

“It was a hard last game, especially against a side like Georgia who are big, physical and good at carrying.

“In the first half we didn’t front up enough, but the first 20 minutes of the second half I felt we did that.

“We saw footage before the game and knew looked a narrow team, so we looked to get outside them and the big forwards.

“We’ve got a good forward pack to play behind, they give us go forward ball. That first period of the second half they had a big impact for us.

“Being behind at half-time isn’t the best position to be in, they lived off our mistakes, but that second period we cut that out and put them under pressure.

“We spoke about physicality and aggression at half-time and we brought that second period.”

Meanwhile, Lloyd’s display in the second game has won praise from Hayward who picked him out as the star performer.

“In fairness to Morgan Lloyd I thought he was absolutely outstanding,” he said.

“I’d say he was our man of the match and won us the game. He executed the space behind their defence with the chip over the top for our try just after half-time, and he excited perfectly straight after which put us back into the ascendancy.”
