Dragons and Wales U20s wing Oli Andrew is targeting back-to-back victories for the national side as they face Georgia on Thursday in the Six Nations Summer Series.
Wales claimed a comprehensive 45-15 victory over Scotland in the competition’s opener with Andrew claiming a brace in a dominant performance.
The Dragons academy product opened the scoring after just two minutes with an excellent finish following a Joe Hawkins crossfield kick.
Andrew demonstrated his delight but insists focus now turns to Georgia on Thursday afternoon as Wales look to make it two wins from two.
“I’m very happy with the two tries can’t ask for a better start to the competition really” said the 19-year-old.
“The first try wasn’t pre-planned it was just reaction, I was calling for it and then I saw Joe kick it and thought yes it’s on here, kick was a bit behind me but it still worked out well.”
He continued “Throughout training camp we’ve said we need to start well, try and score early and we did just that and from there it set the tone and we carried on.
“Scoring four tries in that first half was crucial so we can’t complain really, but we need to take it into Georgia now, same performance, hopefully same result and we are confident we can do that and come away with another victory.”
Wales U20s struggled with the physicality of the opposition during the Six Nations earlier this year but their opening victory over Scotland last week was a huge improvement.
Andrew believes the difference has been the fresh blood brought into the squad and the experience from the likes of locks Dafydd Jenkins, Christ Tshiunza and centre Mason Grady has been massive for Byron Hayward’s side.
The Newport born speedster had high praise for centre Grady and his partner Joe Hawkins, admitting it makes life a lot easier during games with that quality inside of him.
“I think the difference from the six nations is just the experience that we have brought into the changing rooms, there is good vibes in the squad at the moment and having that experience in the difficult situations is crucial.”
“You could see in that second half against Scotland, they threw everything at us, but we defended a lot stronger."
“It makes life so much easier as a winger when you have the likes of Mason (Grady) and Joe (Hawkins) inside of you, especially defensively and it meant I didn’t have to do much because of how good those two were.
“While in attack they are so strong it allows room on the outside for the likes of myself and thankfully it meant I came away with two tries.”
