Dragons support local charities

17/12/2019

Dragons took time out of preparations for the Welsh derby season this week to show support for a number of charities across the region.

The first team playing squad and coaching team was out in force on Monday afternoon to learn about the work of a number of charities and also lend a hand.

Help the Homeless Newport support the homeless and vulnerable in our community throughout the entire calendar year, not just at Christmas.

Cory Hill, Ollie Griffiths, Aaron Jarvis and Aaron Wainwright were among those to take donations down to the homelessness action that are based at a community hub on Commercial Road.

Food Bank Newport, run by Raven House Trust is a christian charity which helps people regardless of religion or ethnic origin with food, furniture and household goods.

Operating from Newport and offering help across Gwent, the charity is based on Cromwell Road in the city.

They were visited by a number of first teamers, including Leon Brown, Taine Basham, Lewis Evansd and Ashton Hewitt, who made donations and helped staff ahead of Christmas.

The players – including Elliot Dee, Tavis Knoyle, Tyler Morgan - also made a special visit to St David’s Hospice Care to meet staff and those currently using the charity.

St. David's provides hospice care to over 2,000 people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, including access to the Newport Day Hospice and the new 15 bed in-patient unit.

The charity provides, and continues to develop, a free and comprehensive palliative care service of excellence throughout Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport, Torfaen and beyond for people, their families and carers facing a progressive life-limiting illness which is no longer curable.

A number of first team players also made visits to Royal Gwent Hospital and Springfield Community Resource Unit to spread some Christmas cheer and meet staff, patients and users.
