In-form Holmes wins coach praise

29/04/2021

Boss Dean Ryan has praised the form of Jonah Holmes – with the wing in the middle of a rich vein of form.

The 28-year-old has now scored eight tries in his last seven appearances for the region and was centre of attention in the Guinness PRO14 Rainbow Cup opener with Scarlets.

Named the Guinness Player-of-the-Match, Holmes grabbed a double and finished the game with five clean breaks and piled up 149 metres with ball in hand.

“Jonah has been working really hard in the background and this summer is probably the best chance to look at a wider group of players,” said Ryan.

“He is physical and fast, and that’s what you need. Wales have some decent wingers but if people are going to be away then I think he will definitely be somebody to discuss.”

Ryan believes Holmes has benefited from Dragons hitting their straps in attack in recent months.

"We have been really comfortable with our attacking game for two months now, as far back as Leinster,” he admitted.

"Over the festive derbies with the loss of Rhodri Williams and Sam Davies, we just went in our shells a little bit and tried to constrain ourselves.

"Gonzalo Bertranou has opened that up and put pressure on 'Rhods', and suddenly our attacking game has just become the lifeblood of what we are trying to do."
