Ryan: Aneurin growing in confidence

12/03/2021

Dean Ryan has spoken at his delight at the progress of young centre Aneurin Owen – with the Dragons Academy graduate again selected for this weekend’s clash with Ulster Rugby.

Owen, 20, was paired with experienced centre Jamie Roberts for the derby day success over Ospreys and now retains his spot at 13 for the Guinness PRO14 clash at Principality Stadium.

Looking ahead to the game in the capital, Director of Dragons Rugby Ryan has spoken about the way the Wales Under-20s ace has impressively made the step up to senior rugby.

“We have been trying to get Aneurin in for a while, but he was framed around that 12 position,” said Ryan.

“We just wanted to change things up a bit, instead of necessarily playing with an out an out 12 and 13, just be more prescriptive about who is doing what job at what time.

“Aneurin has really grown into that role alongside Jamie.

“Jamie is a huge stabilising factor for a young man to come into a game,” he added.

“I have been so pleased for Aneurin and he has grown in confidence.

“He is able now to put some of his strengths on the field which is great.

“I have no reason to change that combination because I think it’s working for both sides."

I have been so pleased for Aneurin and he has grown in confidence... He is able now to put some of his strengths on the field which is great.
